What is mental health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel and carry ourselves in social settings. How we relate to others in society and whether we make choices to realise our full potential, all depends on Mental health.

What is the importance of Mental health in physical wellbeing?

Mental health is an integral and essential component of health. Mental health has a tremendous influence on Physical health and vice versa.

Our core values, thoughts, feelings and attitudes have a huge impact on our bodies. Stress is part of our life, educational competition, family & work demands, to traffic jams, anything can cause us stress. We can feel stress as an emotion like fear, anger or we can get a bodily response like sweating or increased heart rate. Stress can cause an increase in sugar and cholesterol as well. If emotional distress, anger and sadness are not handled correctly, it can lead to depression, anxiety, anger outbursts and addictions.

Therefore at Aloha Clinics, we consider mental health an integral part of treatment for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and blood pressure.

What is psychological counselling/ Psychotherapy and how does it help?

Grounded in dialogue, psychotherapy provides a supportive environment that allows patients to talk openly with a counsellor/therapist who is objective, neutral and nonjudgemental. The counsellor maintains complete confidentiality and helps patients come up with therapy goals and a plan to achieve them while building healthy coping mechanisms.

What are the different psychotherapy methods we practice at Aloha?

The team of psychologists at Aloha Clinics are trained to use the following approaches of psychotherapy:

Person-centred approach: Person-centered therapy uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their solutions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is a practical, short-term form of psychotherapy. It helps people to develop skills and strategies for becoming and staying healthy. CBT focuses on here and now- on the problems that come up in the day to day life.

Rational Emotive Cognitive therapy: According to REBT, it is largely our thinking about events that leads to emotional and behavioural upset. With an emphasis on the present, individuals are taught how to examine and challenge their unhelpful thinking which creates unhealthy emotions and self- defeating/self-sabotaging behaviours.

Play therapy: Play therapy is a form of therapy primarily geared toward children. In this form of therapy, a therapist encourages a child to explore life events that may affect current circumstances, in a manner and at a pace of the child's choosing, primarily through play but also through language.

Group counselling: Group therapy is an effective form of psychotherapy wherein people with the same experiences meet and talk under the guidance/supervision of a qualified therapist or psychologist.
